Welsh Sports Association For People With Learning Disabilities (WSAPLD)

  • WSAPLD was founded in 1981 and is closely associated with the Federation of Disability Sport Wales.
  • Competitors from the North and South Wales Regions, who number almost 700, take part in a wide range of sporting and fitness events.
  • Competition in Athletics and Swimming is based on a banding system which ensures equally matched events.
  • This provides sports and social opportunities for more severely disabled athletes.
  • There are also many fun based, fitness activities which cater for less able competitors.
  • Higher abilities and Elite athletes have opportunities for extra squad training and selection for National and International events.

Most importantly - it is all about participation and enjoyment.

Janice Eaglesham

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Janice Eaglesham MBE.
Janice was one of the leading members of UKSA & SDS and for many years was involved in all levels
of coaching and competition for people with a disability.
Whenever we held a National Games in Wales, Janice would bring her 'Red Star' Team along to compete as an 'Invitation' entry.
She will be sadly missed by all who had known her and a great loss to Disability Sport.

In 2016, she and her husband Ian both received MBEs for services to disability sport.
They were recognised as Unsung Heroes by the BBC at the Sports Personality of the Year Awards in 2011.
They carried the Olympic/Paralympic Torch in 2012 and received countless other accolades.

CEO of Scottish athletics, Mark Munro, said: “Janice has had a massive impact on athletics in Scotland,

Scottish athletics, and disability sport across Scotland and the UK. A phenomenal inspiration to hundreds of athletes and volunteers.”

Double paralympic gold medalist Richard Whitehead also paid tribute, writing: “Janice was a great advocate for empowering young people through sport. Those that were touched by her enthusiasm and drive will be her legacy for generations to come.”

Jon Morgan

CEO of Disability Sport Wales

June 2017

It is with great sadness that we announce the ‘stepping down’ of Jon Morgan following many years of working together for disability sport.

We, in the Association, have seen Jon grow and develop throughout his career and have been privileged to be a part

of the huge difference that he has made to sport for the disabled.

We shall miss him greatly, not only for the support which he has given to this Association

through his role as CEO of DSW but for the personal support and advice he has given specifically to our committee and membership.

We hope that he will still be a welcome attender at our events and wish him every success for the future.
